As Seen On
We Are Sui
Founded in 2018, Sui (known also by their handle @wearesui)—which means "needle" in Hindi—is a sustainable clothing brand that crafts conscious clothing primarily for women, but also crafts sustainable childrenswear and upcycled accessories, always blending nature with fashion. Each piece is designed with a "green heart"—respecting nature, minimising impact, and celebrating the artisans who bring it to life. Sui is based in both India and Singapore, while sourcing and crafting all their clothing within India, utilising many traditional Indian textile techniques and modernising them through their silhouettes and motifs to create pieces that range from formal and dressy to casual and relaxed - a look for every occasion and moment.
The brand’s mission is to make sustainable fashion approachable, beautiful, and engaging, proving that mindful clothing can be both stylish and meaningful, believing that each piece of cloth should be crafted by keeping the earth and people in mind. In today's world where there is a mass wastage of clothes and where quantity is more focused over quality with every season, Sui stands on the principle of slow fashion to guide people towards a more conscious approach of fashion consumption. The idea of ‘being green’ can help each individual to make a conscious purchase.
Their story began with a love for nature and a need to create a better fashion industry, one that does an immense amount of harm due to the unsustainable processes used by many popular fast fashion brands. And so, they aim to bring the connection to nature back to clothing through their nature-inspired collection stories and designs - crafting pieces like, organic dresses women, sustainable denim outfits, natural cotton clothing and more.
They mainly create sustainable women’s clothing but have since evolved to craft organic dresses, sustainable dresses, and more for children; unisex natural cotton clothing like shirts and jackets; and accessories made from recycled and upcycled fabrics.
One way they approach fashion in a more sustainable way, is through sourcing sustainable fabrics. Their cotton is all organic, meaning no pesticides or insecticides are used in farming the fibres resulting in safer work environments for farmers and fabrics for their customers to wear - resulting in pieces like organic dresses women.
Their Kala cotton is another organic fibre and is also a native Indian cotton strain that thrives in harsh environments, needing only to be rain-fed - making the process of growing and producing the fabric resource efficient and low waste.
Their Lyocell and Tencel are another resource efficient fibre due to being grown on sustainably managed plantations that take great care in making sure water is recycled within their system and waste or excess resources are reused wherever it can be.
By using these fabrics, Sui is able to provide sustainable women’s clothing, such as organic dresses and natural natural cotton clothing, that doesn’t compromise on style but still impacts the planet positively.
On another note, they make use of slower production techniques as much as possible, especially using by-hand methods. The hand block printing process is done by hand through every stage, from carving the wooden printing blocks and mixing the azo-free dyes to applying the printing motifs to fabric. They utilise hand embroidery often as well as the handloom. Many of their sustainable dresses and organic dressed women use handspun, handwoven organic cotton and Kala cotton, versatile fabric that are perfect to create organic cotton womens clothes that are super light and comfortable – perfect for everyday moments whether that’s going to a cafe or to the office.
The range of their silhouettes also aids them in providing sustainable options. Crafting organic dresses that can fit into any everyday situation is more sustainable than lots of statements or formal pieces, so much of their designs aim to be timeless and classic–looks that stand the test of time and outlive trends that come and go every season, or sometimes every week! The silhouettes they craft range from mini, midi and maxi dress, comfortable jeans and straight trousers, to classic button down shirts, basic tees, and formal blouses.
Sui also crafts clothing for children through their Little Sui garments, bringing natural cotton clothing, organic dresses, handwoven fabrics, nature-inspired prints, hand embroidery and more to the youngest in our community! With the intention to introduce sustainably made clothing made from comfortable natural fabrics, the hope is to help kids create connections between fashion and nature so that they always understand the value of choosing consciously – all while creating everyday silhouettes that they can run around in nature while wearing that are safe, soft and versatile.
Their accessories collection, An Upcycled Story, includes pieces such as make-up pouches, utility pouches, fanny bags, airpod cases, bags, scarves and more. What makes these pieces sustainable is how they are all crafted using recycled and upcycled fabrics - all of which come from Sui’s own excess fabric stock or waste, meaning they minimise waste through this initiative.
One of Sui’s other main brand pillars also focuses on operating ethically – fair treatment of workers and taking care of our community is also needed as a step towards a more sustainable planet and so, Sui is dedicated to that value. This applies to both their own in-house production team – their tailors, also known as their threadspellers, who they take care to provide a comfortable, safe working environment for as well as provide a livable wage – but also their vendors. Whether Sui is working with a craft community, an NGO or a textile business, they make sure their workers are treated in the same ethical way.
It’s not just their production that makes them a sustainable brand. Sui knows that buying organic dresses once in a while will not make the world sustainable, it instead comes from changing fashion habits, which is why Sui intentionally uses their voice on their platform to teach their community how to approach slow fashion in their everyday – and show how easy it can be! They share tips on how to live sustainably through the mindful acts you carry out each day, and mainly share how building a conscious closet helps you make more sustainable choices.
Sui is not just a brand but a step towards a conscious way of living with a green heart.
